Neighbor is an architecture and urban design firm based on the idea that architecture matters and can contribute to the greater good. We bring a deep history of working on residential, cultural, and urban design projects at all scales and innovating with housing types and architectural detail. We approach our projects with the belief that the built environment is not a given and can be improved upon. We believe in working through client and stakeholder collaboration and know that there is always more to learn from the world around us and people we work with. Prior to starting her own practice, Sarah Dunbar was an Associate at Utile where she managed several projects going through Boston’s Article 80 approvals process. She led the design of multi-family and mixed use projects ranging in size from around 20,000 sq ft to over 250,000 sq ft. Additionally, she led the design of a 125,000 sq ft mixed-use life sciences building in Somerville, MA. Prior to joining Utile, she was an Associate at Sasaki for over four years. At Sasaki, Sarah was a Project Architect on the Boling Buidling in Nubian Square, a designer on the Tec de Monterey masterplan, an urban designer on the Westbrook masterplan, and a project architect on several large residential halls, including the planning of a 1,200 unit residence complex at Dartmouth College.
Paul Miller is an architect passionate about housing and urban form who spent years working in internationally recognized firms prior to starting his own practice, including SOM, SHoP Architects and Utile Design. At SHoP Architects, Paul was a designer on the award winning Barclays Center, an ambitious mixed-use stadium in Downtown Brooklyn. He was also a lead designer on a series of large scale housing masterplans including Domino Sugar in Brooklyn, Atlantic Yards Brooklyn, and Willets Point in Queens. At Utile he was a Project Architect on The Quinn and The Harris, a 273 unit, mixed-use development in Boston’s South End, and he lead schematic design efforts on a high rise residential building at 212 Stuart Street and boutique hotel at 248 Dorchester Avenue.
As Neighbor, Paul and Sarah bring over 30 years of combined experience to their practice, as well as a dedication to applying architectural expertise to housing policy in the effort to create a more equitable and sustainable built environment. Neighbor’s work focuses simultaneously on projects that affect housing policy and zoning, as well as built work that prioritizes sustainability and moments of delight in built space.
